How to use a Sewing Machine
Our How to use a Sewing Machine workshop is for new machine owners and sewers who want to get more from their machine.
If you don’t have a machine yet you can use one of our demonstration machines to find out more before you buy.
Explore the basics of the sewing machine
The session will cover:
- How to choose the right sewing thread, machine needles and bottom bobbin
- Stitch length
- Debunk the tension dial
- Stitching in straight lines and curves
- Discover what those funny looking presser feet are for
- Play with the decorative stitches.
- Now feeling confident with your machine stitch a perfect buttonhole
Please note: your machine must be in full working order and have a current PAT certificate. Please contact us if you need advice about this.
We do not undertake repairs or maintenance.

Workshop terms and conditions:
- To secure a place on the course fees are payable in advance. Unpaid for bookings will not be held.
- Sorry, fees are non-refundable.
- The cost of course materials is not included in the fee unless otherwise stated in the course description.
- Tuition outside the course dates will be charged extra.
- Jane White Couture Tuition reserves the right to cancel or change the date of courses.
- Your sewing machine must be in full working order. Please contact us before booking the session if you need help with this.
- Jane White Couture Tuition cannot be responsible for student’s internet connection to join or during the course. In the event of an internet outage at our end an alternative date will be offered.
- The course information is an outline. The amount of work completed during the session will depend on your pre-existing skills and pace of work.
