Pattern Cutting Blocks: skirt, trouser, bodice and sleeve

Pattern cutting blocks

Our Pattern Cutting Blocks course is for sewers who would like to progress beyond commercial sewing patterns by making their own.

This course introduces basic garment block drafting and the use of the toile to achieve a good fit.

Taking accurate body measurements

The course starts with an explanation of how to take an accurate set of body measurements. Jane will explain why each measurement is important and the effect it has on fit.

Drafting Garment Blocks

Using your body measurements, you will draft basic garment blocks. Choose from a tailored skirt, trousers or bodice and sleeve.
If you are new to pattern cutting the skirt is the first block because it introduces the basic concepts.

The toile and fit

Fitted to the wearer and constructed in calico, the toile (fitting shell) refines the fit. The fitted basic block is the foundation of making garment patterns.
Most students complete the skirt block and one other during this two-day course.
