Read Katy’s inspiring story from ‘how to use an overlocker’ to baby lock trainer.
When Katy booked the three hour ‘How to use an overlocker’ she had no idea where it would lead, neither did I.
With a fancy for making dance wear, Katy came along to learn how to use an overlocker and was instantly hooked. Her first purchase was an Elna 664 Pro. Booking a series of workshops, she was soon up and running and making fabulous jersey clothes.
The bright orange orangutan costume is particularly memorable!
This coincided Jane White Tuition being invited to be an agent for the fabulous baby lock brand. The baby lock coverstitch machine, which in Jane’s opinion is the best machine on the market, was Katy’s next purchase.
Katy’s dressming skills continued to progress. Her prom dress for a very lucky niece is on display in at the studio and is much admired. It is a remarkable piece of work for someone who had only been sewing for six months.
The combination overlocker/coverstitch machine, the Ovation, shortly followed as did undertaking four modules of my City & Guild Equivalent course. Katy explored design, pattern cutting and construction gaining a distinction for each module.
With the growth of the baby lock brand in the UK they were looking for someone to join their team for demonstrations, shows and training. I knew I had the perfect person!
Katy is now a valued member of the baby lock team travelling around the country supporting agents, demonstrating at show and running workshops.
I couldn’t be more pleased for her. Sometimes you meet a student who you know from the start just has that X factor, innate skills and above all enthusiasm.
As a tutor it is such a thrill to see students progress and their confidence grow. Whilst it may not always be into employment withing the industry, every achievement is valued whether it is inserting a a concealed zip beautifully, deciding to learn a new skill or taking the plunge to get out and meet new people.
I am extremely lucky to do something I love with amazing people.
Well done Katy, I couldn’t be more proud!
